Christmas Cookies

We just had our Cookie/Candy sale at church. We had more candy than ever and even had an overflow table stacked with duplicates to be filled in slots as needed.  It was a very successful 5 hour sale. We also serve chili for lunch.

When my dad worked, on Black Friday mom and I would spend all day making cookies, decorated sugar cookies, spritzes, any kind of Christmas cookie we wanted to make.  We would take a box and cover it with paper and decorate it.  That next Monday dad would take it into work and the guys he worked with enjoyed the benefits of our day.  It was so much fun and the guys enjoyed the cookies so much.

My last year of working I did this for the guys I worked with. It was a lot of work but it was worth the effort.  The cookies did not last long though and when gone, well I was not making any more.

Make a batch of cookies and take them to someone, it will be one of the best gifts you can give.

The Dollar Bill

Do your children know this? – Do their teachers? – Do you?
Who Was Haym Solomon?
Read this fascinating history of the $1 bill all the way to the bottom to know about Haym Solomon. You may be in for quite a surprise!
On the rear of the One Dollar bill, you’ll see two circles. Together, they comprise the Great Seal of the United States. The First Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up with a Seal. It took them four years to accomplish this task and another two years to get it approved.
If you look at the left-hand circle, you’ll see a Pyramid.
Notice the face is lighted, and the western side is dark. This country was just beginning. We hadn’t begun to explore the west or decide what we could do for Western Civilization. The Pyramid is uncapped, again signifying that we weren’t even close to being finished. Inside the Capstone you have the all-seeing eye, an ancient symbol for divinity. It was Franklin's belief that one man couldn't do it alone, but a group of men, with the help of God, could do anything.
“IN GOD WE TRUST” is on this currency.
The Latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means, “God has favored our undertaking.”
The Latin below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means, “a new order has begun.”
At the base of the pyramid is the Roman numeral for 1776. (MDCCLXXVI)
If you look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you’ll learn that it’s on every National Cemetery in the United States. It’s also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery, and is the centerpiece of most heroes' monuments.
Slightly modified, it’s the seal of the President of the United States, and it’s always visible whenever he speaks, yet very few people know what the symbols mean.
The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons:
First, he isn’t afraid of a storm; he’s strong, and he’s smart enough to soar above it.
Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England.
Also, notice the shield is unsupported. This country can now stand on its own.
At the top of the shield there’s a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as one nation.
In the Eagle's beak you read, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” meaning, “from many – one.”
Above the Eagle, we have the thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Again, we were coming together as one.
Notice what the Eagle holds in his talons. He holds an olive branch and arrows. This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows.
An (untrue) old-fashioned belief says that the number 13 is an unlucky number which is almost a worldwide belief. You’ll almost never see a room numbered 13, or any hotels or motels with a 13th floor. But think about this:
America, which relies on God (not a number) to direct and lead, boldly chose:
13 original colonies,
13 signers of the Declaration of Independence ,
13 stripes on our flag,
13 steps on the pyramid,
13 letters in “Annuit Coeptis,”
13 letters in “E Pluribus Unum,”
13 stars above the eagle,
13 bars on that shield,
13 leaves on the olive branch,
13 fruits,
and if you look closely,
13 arrows.
And finally, notice the arrangement of the 13 stars in the right-hand circle. You’ll see that they are arranged as a Star of David.
This was ordered by George Washington who, when he asked Haym Solomon, a wealthy Philadelphia Jew, what he would like as a personal reward for his services to the Continental Army. Solomon said he wanted nothing for himself, but he would like something for his people. The Star of David was the result. Few people know it was Solomon who saved the Army through his financial contributions ... then died a pauper. Haym Solomon gave $25 million to save the Continental Army, money that was sorely needed to help realize America's and our freedom and independence from England.
Therein lies America's Judeo-Christian beginning.
Most American children do NOT know any of this. They aren’t taught because their history teachers do NOT know this. (They were not taught!)
On America's Freedom:
Too many veterans gave up too much to let the meaning fade.
Many veterans came home to an America that did not care.
Too many veterans never came home at all.
They served, they died for you and for me.
I hope you will share this page with many so they can learn about the UNITED STATES DOLLAR BILL, and what it stands for.
America is at a critical juncture. Let's do whatever we can to save her while never, ever forgetting:
It is God in whom we put our trust!

The Sky is on Fire

Sometimes the sunrise only lasts a few minutes but oh is it gorgeous.  This morning for about 5 minutes the sky looked like it was on fire.

Thanksgiving

Today just sucks, my dad is not here and he would so love to have his pecan pie.  He would only have wanted that, maybe the angels made him a pie.  I remember one time when I was a kid and dad was going to school in OKC at the FAA Academy he had the flu and it was Thanksgiving. He suggested to mom we go out to eat and he only wanted his pecan pie.

And today my refrigerator died, no more death in my life, be it people, or material objects,  I am not a fan of stores being open on holidays because it is all about the greed, but today I am thankful Best Buy is open so I can get the process started of me getting a new one.  This one only lasted 10 years, I expect at least 20 and these things ain't cheap either.

What I am most thankful for today is the day before my father's demise started we spent the day together.  We go to the dentist together and although he hated going there he loved them and they loved him right back. Because it took longer for me than him they would sit him out front and give him coffee and a cookie.  We went to Panera for lunch as it was in between our doctor appointments. He had his coffee and potato soup and we split a sugar cookie. Then he had a cardio appointment and got a clean bill of health.  We had so much fun and solved the world's problems and just enjoyed the day together.  I never figured it would be the last time I would spend with my dad that he would know who I was and be well enough that we could enjoy the day together.  Thank you God for letting me have this one last day on earth with my dad.

Thanksgiving Proclamation

If you have never read this go here and see what Lincoln did for Thanksgiving.  Thank you Mrs Hale.

Acceptance

I was looking through some old magazines mom had in a stack and found this:  It is from Eleanor Roosevelt.

You have to accept whatever comes, and the only important thing is that you meet it with the best you have to give.

Sounds like something my dad would have told me.

Feeling All Alone

Today it is dark and cloudy and there are threats of that white stuff that my dad and I hated so much, yep snow.  I got 2 pieces of mail on how to deal with the loss of a parent.  I don't need a book or pamphlet to tell me how I might feel or how to deal with it, I need my dad back.  I am not one to feel alone or lonely but today I do.  More cards of beautiful words from people wanting me to now they are thinking of me and praying for me.  I don't feel any of the stages except I just miss my dad.  I know he is at peace now and that is what is best for him but... I don't have anyone to watch baseball with any more, or cuss at the democrats for how they are ruining the country, or solve the world's problems, or him sharing his chocolate with me, or us sneaking a cup of coffee in the afternoon when mom is not home, or all the other simple things we did.  Is it supposed to hurt this much, like my heart has been ripped out.  I just miss my dad.

CFA I Apologize

I wondered when word came about CFA not supporting 2 Christian based organizations and dropped them like a hot potato.  I got caught up in the left trying to get me to divorce myself from my fav fast food restaurant.  So I apologize and will not be giving them up.  Here is the real truth.

Chick-fil-A made commitments to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and to the Salvation Army in the past. Their giving model was multi-year commitments, which varied with each charitable organization. These terms were always communicated clearly to the recipients in writing. Again, I know this first hand. Such was the case with the 2 organizations mentioned above. CFA’s commitments to them have reached their term and are now over. CFA is in no way obligated to continue to give to any organization into perpetuity. So while you may be hearing that “Chick-fil-A “dropped” these organizations suddenly,” and then infer (quite wrongly) that it is due to a shift in values or capitulation to the LGBTQ mafia, that is simply not the case.
What’s changed is not CFA’s mission or values, but their giving strategy. Their express desire is to reevaluate their giving annually. They’ve stated that the $9million they’ve set aside in 2020 will go to youth education, combatting youth homeslessness, and fighting hunger. Ok. Doesn’t get my engine revving, but ok...not my call to make. I get to decide where the Satterfield family and Emmaus Road Church gives and where we focus. I don’t get to decide for CFA.
To some, it appears to be capitulation, and I understand that feeling. But know that it is merely a feeling - a suspicion, a misgiving, an impression. If you haven’t been in the top-level meetings, or heard first-hand from those who were that this whole thing is driven by the fear of the Left, then you have NO BUSINESS speculating to the detriment of a company that has only been faithful to Biblical principles for 73 years.

Dear Chick Fil A

We are done.  You have always been my favorite fast food place.  I stayed when you got rid of my chicken salad sandwich and cole slaw.  I waited in line one day for 45 minutes when the left went to attack you.  But now you have done it.  You have caved to the left and I can only imagine you will lose a lot of us who have always stood beside you.  So as much as I hate to I am leaving.

Make it Stop

Yesterday as I finished moving mom out of the apartment she shared with dad I felt like I was saying goodbye to my dad all over again.  Then I found out the lady I sat by at church for years who I loved died of pneumonia yesterday morning.  She was such a sweet lady.  It had got to the point where she could not help with the sales anymore but she came in and packaged crackers in baggies for the lunch soup we served.  She did not think it was much but like I told her, I would have to pull someone off the floor helping set up for a couple hours and you save me from doing that.  What she did helped more than she thought.  RIP Vadeen, I loved you and our row at church will be so empty now.

There's a Hole in my Heart

There's a hole in my heart
That can only be filled by you
And this hole in my heart
Can't be filled with the things I do.

My father died a week ago today.  There is a huge hole in my heart that will never be repaired.  He was 95 1/2 and lived a hell of a life.  It was so sudden he fell and broke his hip and never came home after 10 days of being in ICU and hospice.  He had dementia, afib, and had to use a walker to walk.  I was going to have to put him in Memory Care soon and he would have hated it.

His brother and sister and parents went before him.  He had not seen his sister for almost 60 years. I can only imagine the beautiful reunion between them.  He always hated he never got to spend much time with her here on earth.

He is whole again and is well, no more diseases that can't be cured.  I miss you dad so much, you were my best friend we could talk about anything, you gave me advice, taught me how to take care of myself and to be strong.  My mom always said you are just like your dad, that made me so happy.  I love you dad and am so proud to be your daughter.  Someday I will see you again and we can solve the world's problems.  Until then...

Decorah Eagle Nest

The camera has been turned back on the Decorah nest.  OH how I missed watching an empty nest for a glimpse of mom and DM2.  But this morning there are sticks being brought in so nest restorations are beginning to prepare for next February when we will have new eggs to watch.  Need something to relax you, go watch the camera for a few minutes and watch nature at it's finest.

Critters all around the yard

So I have 3 spiders out front now building webs on the front porch, you need to duck when you come up on the front porch. They are orange in color and the webs are beautiful.

Last night I heard a ruckus on the deck, figured my little racoon had fallen off the rail but nope this is what I see.  And he brought a friend for dinner.

I watched a squirrel take the green shell of a walnut and then try and hide it under the frame of the storm door on the deck, then he ran off. Dude that is not hid and good luck not having that stolen.

I have a yellow rose in the midst of my hostas still blooming.

Joy

This morning it was so cloudy I could not get a picture of the web and as I walked out the front door to the right of my porch was a new web. I thought Charlotte had moved as it was out of the way, nope I have a new spider, much smaller and a bright orange.  Since Charlotte named her daughters I have named her Joy.  So now I have 2 spiders to watch.  Charlotte has zipped her web already and is napping, not sure she had a snack this morning and Joy runs to the top by the overhang when I come out the front door.  Her nest is so tucked in the shade I can not get a picture of it but it is much smaller than Charlotte's and attached to the bird feeder.

This is Joy, her web is almost perfect but so light you can not see it with the clouds. It is also protected from the sun by the porch.
This is Charlotte packing  up her web before she naps til dark.  They are fascinating to watch.

Smaller Web

Last night when I went to bed Charlotte had started work on her web.  Not sure how she sees but there is a street light on my corner and the yard is quite light, so.  Her web this morning is smaller but her meal is a bit bigger.  Will she tear it down or leave it up today.  And what happens when I clean up the flower bed and take down the tall sunflower she is anchored to, I may have to leave it up til she leaves the area.

Charlotte's Web

Charlotte's Web is my favorite book, I have no idea how many times I have read it or how many copies I have.  Every time I see a copy at a sale I buy it.  This morning when I got up and opened the dining room curtain I found this beautiful web.  She had just spun around a snack and so I went outside to see what was going on.  She hooked on to the sunflower plant and the eaves of the house and strung it cat-a-corner across the flower bed outside the dining room.  With the moisture and sun it was beautiful.  She ate her snack and then started to cinch up where the hole is until there was nothing but a straight line and then she went up to the eave and has napped since.  She is a light orange color, not sure what kind of spider she is.  I call all spiders Charlotte after my favorite one.

Goodbye Summer

We had a mild Summer, never got to 100 and had a few days in the 90's. The grass never turned brown, we had plenty of rain, and now it is gone. I am not a Fall person. It is my worst allergy season with ragweed and mold being the two toppers for me.  I don't like the leaves falling and everything dying and then comes Winter.  I am not a Winter person at all.  Once it gets below 55 I am done.  I can't go outside and do yard work and you have to wear layers and fight the cold and ice and snow.  We go for days or weeks without sun and it is very depressing.  I like the long days of daylight and it is dark before 8 now and not light until around 7am.  So now I wait for Spring and enjoy the last days of my flowers while I can.

Week 24 Sharing

What skills do you have which can be passed along to family, neighbours and friends?

* What new skill have you learned in the past year? Who taught you?

* What skill would you like to learn?

I have taught many people how to knit and crochet.  How to cook, bake, and other things.  I believe if God gave you a talent you are to use it to teach others and help them learn new things.

I would like to learn to can. I remember in High School I helped my mom but she never really taught me how to do it. I bought some books and got some jars and want to make apple butter this Fall.  I want to learn to tat, and knit the brioche stitch, and the double knit stitch, and tunisian crochet.

The author's daughter who loves to bake calls cupcakes fairy cups.  I like cupcakes because it is like you get a piece of cake all by itself.

So many parents today just do it themselves instead of teaching their children how to do things. Those kids go into the world without any skills and mom and dad still have to take care of them.  I saw so many of my co-workers who had 30 year old kids who could not even do laundry or cook a meal.  That does not do them any good at all.  I was fortunate that my mom taught me how to cook, do laundry, clean the house and my dad taught me to hang sheetrock and wire the house.  I can change a tire and do lots of things that kids can't do nor do they want to cos they can either call mom or dad or pay to have it done.  It is very sad that kids today are not self sufficient.

Share a skill you have with someone, you both will be happy and have a good time.

Week 23 Luxury Part 2

* How do you make personal time amidst the busyness of domestic life?

* What do you serve for afternoon teas?

* How long since you've sat around the table with family or friends and enjoyed a morning or afternoon tea feast? Is it time you did?

* What do you keep handy to pick up and relax with when short periods of rest fall in your lap?

Although I am retired I still don't have a lot of free time. Seems if I have one free day with nothing on my calendar during the week my mother somehow knows and finds a way to use it up.  I have got to the point where I tell her no more often because I need my time to de-stress from dealing with elderly parents.

I am not a hot tea person, i was raised on coffee. I do like iced tea but it is not an event but a drink for those hot summer days.  I do love a good scone though.  I have often though of making a scone cookbook for me with all my fav recipes.  I even took a class on making them.  That butter needs to be cold to pop in that hot oven to give the scone the flakiness and don't over bake them so they are hard as rocks.

I have a leather chair in my living room that has a good light behind it and has wide arms.  There are always a couple projects either on the left arm or around the chair.  My mood depends on which project I pick up to work.  I always tell people just knit one row a day or 10 minutes.  Knitting calms me I don't care how easy or difficult the project, I get in my zone and the whole world goes away.

Eagle Release

SOAR released D33 and the others today.  I hope they will be ok.  They are sporting tags in hopes that if they are ever caught again we will know who they are.

Yes, D33, DN9, Allamakee, and Calmar have taken their “wild maiden flight.” If you watched the video with the post titled “Gaining flight strength” you saw much improvement in flight skills in each of these young eagles. These eagles showed Kay they were ready… so back to the 20 x 60’ flight pen with the soft-release window. Now that you’ve watched the video a time or three, raise your hand if you noticed that each is sporting new jewelry? Yes, these four bald eagles have an official USGS band. Years ago, Kay was a sub-permittee on a banding permit, so she and her husband have the experience of banding bald eagles. Kay talked with Brett Mandernack of Eagle Valley Nature Preserve as he has banded young bald eagles (including from the Decorah nest) as part of his research project looking at juvenile dispersal and travel behavior. Would Brett consider banding these four?

So, your next burning questions are about D32. Will D32 be banded? The plan is to NOT band D32. Will D32 be released? That is our hope. But first, not only does D32 need time in the 100’ flight pen, the 20 x 60’ pen will be used to soft release some red-tailed hawks and then peregrine falcons (or vice versa). When D32 moves to a larger flight pen, we’ll try to get video then.

Hypocrites

So the climate change people are out protesting today.  I can't even take you seriously when you travel to these events by something other than walking or bicycling.  Did you have an electronic device today, did you charge it?
I do believe the climate changes, it is called WEATHER.  Read the Farmer's Almanac, we go in 10 year cycles with the weather.  And oh by the way God is in charge of the weather, not me flying on jets, driving my SUV, and eating hamburgers.
Climate change, like Obamacare, is another way for the elites to take more of my money and throw it at themselves all the while we walk and they take their limos everywhere.  Stop brainwashing children and focus on something worthwhile like slamming the border shut.  Meanwhile I think I will go turn all the lights on in my house.

D27 Back Home

If you remember D27 was the last Decorah Eagle fitted with a transmitter.  She has been quite busy coming home for the winter.  She is quite the flier and her wings must be worn out with the miles she travels per hour.

Anyway this a great article about her return home for the winter and what life is like for her up North in Canada.

Department of Energy

Stay out of my house.  First the government changes the light bulbs and that is crap cos I used to get 4 to a box for a little over a dollar and they lasted forever, now they are $8 each and don't last as long and oh I can't just throw them in the trash.  Not buying them now or ever.  Then you changed my toilet to low water, you do realize I have to flush more cos you can't put as much in the toilet as you used to.  Now they want us to melt.

I keep my temp at 73 24/7 365/366 days a year.  It is my right to do that, I pay my bill and yes they are high at various times of the year.  But I prefer to be comfortable.  I have to wonder how many of you at the DOE have a 2 story house, cos we all know the upstairs where the bedrooms are is a higher degree or cooler depending on what time of year it is.  Because the idiots who built my house did not do the vents right it can be as much as 10 degrees warmer in the summer. So if I am to keep my house at 85 during the day i may as well just open the windows and turn off the a/c cos that upstairs is gonna be an oven.  Since I am retired I stay home and expect that I can be comfortable. What about pets, do I let them sweat like a fat pig in the mid-day sun?

Tell you what stay out of my life, let the market decide what light bulbs and toilets we use.  Let us decide if we want to pay high utility bills and you find a way to keep that electricity coming to my house.  And if you want to regulate utilities how about you look into what they pay for that we pay for that are not necessary such as paying for bigwigs to go golfing on my dime, now that is something you can mess in.

Week 22 Luxury Part 1

1. What would you read with chocolate?

2. What are the luxuries in your life?

3. Are you adventurous enough to sew from a foreign book you cannot read?

Luxury:  conjures all kind of things to me:  but it is one of those words that means something different to every one of us.  For me there is a city about half an hour away that makes wine from honey. Yes it is very sweet and oh so good. They have a raspberry wine that is the perfect companion to a rich piece of chocolate cake.  The sugar is so sweet your teeth ache but it is oh so good and a little goes a long way.

I would like to have a skein of quiviut someday but at $95/ounce that is one yarn that I have to save up for. It is so soft.  I can only imagine a cowl around my neck not only for the warmth but the feel.

Magnum ice cream bars:  the chocolate caramel almond ones. When you take that first bite the chocolate cover cracks and out runs all the wonderful flavors inside.  They are not cheap but I consider them a splurge (a luxury).

A rich cup of coffee especially on a cold day. It tastes so good and warms you up, is there anything better on a snowy cold winter day?

A skein of cashmere yarn, flannel sheets, a good book, a cup of cocoa, a rich red wine, champagne, chocolate and more chocolate, a cup of coffee, scones, fig newtons, are just some of my luxuries. I dont have them very often but to me they are a treat, a luxury I allow myself from time to time. I don't need or want a fur coat, lots of jewelry, a huge house or many houses, etc.

What book goes with chocolate, all of them.  Chocolate goes with everything, doesn't it?

Finally

I normally have 2 hummingbirds who nest in my yard but they have been evasive for me getting a picture. Finally yesterday he held long enough for my picture now that they will be leaving soon.  I miss them in the winter but then I get to have my Juncos so it is an even trade.

The chickadees were out in full force yesterday afternoon especially after I filled the feeder that hangs on the deck light.  I love when they start in with their chick a dee dee dee talk. ONe of my fav birds and they stay all year.  The babies are so small and cute.

Sunrise, Sunset

One of the reasons I like living in the middle of the country is we have breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.  They have been particularly gorgeous this past week.  Pink clouds in the morning followed by orange/yellow/purple in the evening.

Visitor to the Meadow Sage

I look out my windows a lot because there is always something going on in the yard.  Birds, possums, racoons, feral cats, butterflies, hummingbirds, Japanese beetles, lizards, an occasional snake, fox, deer, etc.  I have my own zoo.

The other day I found this beauty.

Birthday Gifts

Every year I splurge and buy myself a birthday gift, something I really want.  So this year I got 2, why not.  A friend posted this kit on FB and I just had to have it. I really only wanted the pattern and now you can get it over there, so it came.  I had an orange cat as my first and so this will be perfect.  You kind of make it like a sock, so perfect for my obsession of knitting socks.  How cute is this?

I have wanted to learn to spin. I took a class and it was a disaster, the teacher was awful. I bought a wheel as my retirement gift and it has sat because family issues came up and I have never got back to learning how.  So another friend posted this on FB and I thought maybe if I could skip the part of the feet and hand coordination and just concentrate on my hand work I can learn how to spin.  And of course they had purple, so my second gift came on the same day as my sock cat kit.  Yes it is small but I need to simplify my learning to someday get all the parts working to make my own yarn.  One of the things on my bucket list.

Week 21 Comfort Part 2

* What do you do with all your quilts and does it bother you to see them used to the point of obvious wear and tear?
* How do you create a comfortable environment in your home?
* Share three things that add a sense of comfort to your life. (comfort being related to 'comfortable' and not the comfort offered to the sorrowful)

I have one quilt and it is wearing out but it is the only I have and will use it til it is just rags.  Someday I will have to find a new one. And no that is one hand craft I will never try, too much fuss.  My aunt tells me I wash mine too much well with 3 cats I wash it monthly during the winter when I use it, otherwise it is put up til cold enough to bring it out.

There are afghans over every chair or a lap quilt.  Pillows are there as well.  Books, yarn, and if you come over and I know you are on the way some type of buttery fat goodies will pop out of the oven soon.  There will be coffee or tea or cocoa as well.

3 things that most give me comfort, my cats, my knitting and my books. I can pretty much escape with all 3 and drown out the world.

Week 20 Comfort

* What brings your own gentle domestic heart comfort?

When I hear the word comfort I immediately go to food.  Baking powder biscuits, mac and cheese, brownies, mom and pop diners where you get "comfort" food.  You know the ones, every town has them and everyone knows where they are.  They are not healthy but who cares, sometimes you just need some buttery fatty goodness to make you feel good.

Afghan and sweaters are the second thing I think of.  Who does not like to snuggle under an afghan and lay on the couch when you are sick or it is cold outside.  Bundle up in a sweater, your fav and big wooly socks in the winter and stay home and drink cocoa and watch TV.

My dad has dementia and he only finds comfort in his apartment now.  Any place else and he gets out of sort.  His cat and my mom are there, his chair, his walker, his coffee pot and cup, cookies in the afternoon.  They bring him comfort in his world now.

Getting lost in a book or a knitting project or some other handcraft project bring me comfort.  A chance to read a great book and forget about the world or to create something that will bring me even more comfort when I wear or use it.  Working in the flower bed, getting dirt all over me, and seeing the flowers bloom, the catepillars on the milk weed, the wild sunflowers that always pop up every year, they give me comfort.  Feeding the birds, they are such a joy to watch and when the babies arrive at the feeders well there is a new beginning.

Th author talks about vintage embroidered dresser scarves.  I collect them and doilies.  They remind me of my grandmothers and the comfort a grandmother can bring.  The time and work that went into making them.  Did they give comfort to a time of escaping from the world and concentrating on hand work?  I don't think anyone make dresser scarves any more, but when isee one in a thrift store I always snatch it up and put it on some piece of furniture.  I love to make doilies, i have a ton of "doily" thread that I need to start using and place them around my house.  Someday one of those filet crochet tablecloths will be on dining room table. I have the pattern and thread, but the time always escapes me.  Someday.

D32 Update from SOAR

~ D32 still needs intensive care ~
D32 was also thin, dehydrated, and anemic on admit, but D32 also has the added complication of needing to mend a broken bone in the lower right leg. Photo from 26 June 2019.
The report from Kay on 1 July 2019: D32 is still behaving like he is in the nest. He has made no indication of wanting out of the crate. Now that D32 has progressed to eating cut-up food on own, the crate and bedding are cleaned frequently. (The noting of 'he' is a pure guess at this point!)
We know it's difficult to see D32 still in an intensive care crate, but this is the level of care he needs right now.
Raise your hand if you've ever broken your leg or has had to care for a young person with a broken leg? It's not fun to be in a cast, to have our daily routine altered, and to not play with other children, but that is the level of care needed. In due time, the bone is x-rayed for the doctor to determine the amount of healing, the cast is replaced, and activity restrictions may be changed. Even once the cast is off, appropriate physical therapy will be needed.

Week 19 Style

How has your personal style changed between your teenage years and today? Or do you still follow the same basics today?

* What do you find challenging about embroidery? Are you confident making changes to a pattern or do you prefer to follow it the way it's written?

* With regards to quilt making, have you been inspired to create a quilt from difficult fabrics in your stash?  What was the source of inspiration and were you happy with the end result?

* What have you purchased direct from a maker that has become a treasure?
Knitted Vests: I have always wanted to make one, but never have, guess I have never found a pattern I cared to try or I had other things with a deadline.  I am putting this project at the top of my must knit list.  It would be easier than a sweater because no sleeves.  You don't see a lot of them today, are they old fashioned or not in style, or no one wears vests anymore.
Embroidery:  I can I just am not good at it because I have not done it much. I keep collecting Jenny's patterns thinking someday, well someday needs to come because I have a stack that needs my attention.  I just have other things on my list, maybe I need to clear that list for vests and embroidery.  I do find when I go to antique stores I look for dresser scarves and doilies which i love and use. I know it is old fashioned but I don't care, I love them.  I often wonder who they were made for, why were they given away, did no one want them any more?
Quilts: Not for me, too much fussy perfection involved.  I have cut out squares to make a Halloween quilt and like everything else they are sitting waiting to be sewn.  I just have too much on my plate to get all these projects done.
Craft Fair: I love to go to these to see what others are doing and get ideas.  I try to buy at least one thing but that is hard to do.  A couple of my friends have booths so I try to go and support them.  I also like to hit the hand made embroidered tea towels and get at least one or two.  My aunt made me one a couple years ago and my hand embroidered ones are very thread bare.  But they are the best because someone actually took the time to make them.  A couple years ago I went to a Tea Fest where a pottery artist was trying to get in the market.  She had 2 purplish bowls that were so cheap I bought them.  I see she is in business and her prices have over doubled, so I feel fortunate I got them cheaper and they compliment the purples in my bedroom.

It is too bad that kids today don't understand what goes into making something.  The time and love and trials and tests and wondering if anyone will buy it or like it.  It is sad they are not taught to actually know the satisfaction of making something.  It is a skill that needs to be taught again, so go out and teach someone something they can make.  Self satisfaction of a job tried never gets old.

Animal Farm Meet 1984

So Animal Farm is beginning to get more and more interesting by the day.  We all know they basically banned anyone who showed support of the POTUS.  I was pointed to a video last night.  It was very enlightening.  Animal Farm says they have over 8 million members yet when you go in and do some looking only about 600,000 actually have any information in their profiles, so what are the rest of the members doing?  Also when they came out with the "banning" of he who shall not be named they said no new memberships.  Really then how do you explain the hundreds of new accounts the past few days, and oh look none of them have anything in their profile. So who are these new members and how did they get in if new accounts are banned.  I think the pigs have got a hold of some rotten whiskey cos they are making no sense now and just making stuff up to cover their behinds.

Last night this happens:  Hate speech just like making Animal Farm inclusive for all.  I know they can do what they want they own Animal Farm, however I think the rules have got a bit out of sorts.  If you hate the POTUS you can stay, if you support anything the POTUS does you have to hit the road.  Animal Farm has a monopoly of sorts for the craft world in the arena it supports, mostly knit and crochet.  Why do we have to include politics. If I see a pattern I like I used to not care who created it.  Now I want to know which way they lean because if they believe I am a white supremacist and practice hate speech then they do not get my money or business.  I don't care if you are giving free patterns away, want no part of it.  I vote with my money since 2008.

Is Animal Farm interfering with the upcoming election, why are they all of a sudden doing this now that the left army of candidates is wandering around the country.  Is the head pig being funding by George Soros, or some other lefty group?  Who is the puppet master behind this?  Be careful out there the left is doing everything they can to cheat and win the next election because afterall we deplorables need to be squashed like a bug so they can take full control.

Bye Charlotte

I set Charlotte free this afternoon. She was more than ready, fluttering around in the cage. She did not hestitate for a minute, once out she flew around to the back yard probably looking for shade as it is miserable hot and muggy.  I showed her where the milkweed is and the petunias that are so fragrant.  I did not want to let her go but I had to.  It was one of those best days of my life to be a part of something so fragile and beautiful.  I hope there are many more to come this summer.

Charlotte

It's a girl.  Meet Charlotte.  As she was beginning to work her wings this morning I was talking to her.  For some reason the name Charlotte popped in my head as I was thinking of Charlotte of Charlotte's Web (my fav book) and all the baby spiders came tumbling out and she named them.  She is beautiful and will be let go tomorrow.  I will post pictures.  She can go out and lay eggs and hopefully I will find her children and hatch them and help populate the butterfly population.  I have a lot of new milkweed coming up this year and have some seeds i need to get in the ground this Fall.

Worth the Wait

I woke up this morning to my first butterfly. Now to let the wings dry and figure out if it is a male or female and eventually let it go this weekend.

I lost the first one it was parasitized.  Now on to the next batch.

Animal Farm

If you have not read the book Animal Farm you need to. I read it periodically to remind me that we are closer and closer to the book.

So you all know about that knitting website which shall not be named.  Seems pajama boy and his snowflakes just can't stand to abide by the First Amendment and this has happened. Seems like his inclusiveness does not include anyone who supports the POTUS.  What a bunch of little cry babies.  You may remember in 2008 this happened to the McCain supporters who were removed from that place because of the snowflakes and their fawning love for their annointed one.  They got pajama boy to remove almost everyone from the group. Now we see shades of this only worse.  One lady created a Trump 2020 hat and the snowflakes were so upset that it got removed, yet the F Trump and the Trump voodoo dolls and much worse than that are allowed to remain.  Where are my rights as a conservative knitter, well they simply don't exist because the "pigs" (reference to Animal Farm) are in charge and the whole website has become a political shit hole, not a place for knitters and crocheters to gather and enjoy the craft.

In fact the left has gone so far over the edge it is hard to enjoy the craft anymore.  There are so many designers, yarn dyers, etc out there that are spewing the left bullshit that there is hardly anyone to get a pattern or yarn from. I realize the number of conservative versus left is small but we do have money and we do spend a lot on our craft.  It is your loss.

So this happened this morning.

To say I am pissed is putting it mildly.  I could care less what they think of me, but they are denying me my First Amendment rights when they are allowed to use theirs and then some.  IF you think the country  is divided because of Trump you are so wrong.  The left is doing this because it is one of their steps to making our great country one where only the elite rule the rest of us.  Wake up sheeple if they can destroy a knitting website, what will they do to our country.

2nd Cocoon

I got up this morning and the second caterpillar had cocooned.  You can barely see it hanging down from the top.  I did not want to disturb the cage and move it around to get a picture, so now we wait for a week or so.

D32 Update from SOAR

~ 20 June 2019 D32 Update ~
D32 is remaining quiet and content. The splint / cast seems to be staying in place. Still being offered cut-up food so no need to stand on food to rip / tear. Kay will not worry about a weight or a beak depth measurement until possibly the next trip to the veterinarian (no the appointment is not scheduled). Limited handling means limited stress. So... basically, no news is good news.

Week 18 The Gentle Art of Domesticity

* Which topic spoke out to you? Why?
* Who would you consider a style icon and what do you admire about them?
*  Do you gain inspiration from trends or are you confident in your own style?
* Do you collect anything kitschy? Tell us about it. I'm sure many would consider my collection of vintage linens as kitsch.

Great style should appear effortless.  In this week's reading she talks about Cary Grant and Doris Day movies.  If you know me you know my fondness for Doris Day and she just passed.  TCM had all her movies on last weekend and they are on my DVR for one of those days when I need to escape from the world and watch them and knit.  I loved her clothes in the movies, the suits, shoes, hat, purse, perfectly coifed hair, etc.  That is not me, but I loved her because she seemed to just slide into the clothes and it was sheer perfection.  Cary Grant, now there is a man who was gorgeous but in a tux, well be still my heart.  (Too bad women today only have those man bun soy latte drinking boys to look at).

I am a jeans and tee shirt girl. In the winter I live in my sweats and feel like wearing a pair of jeans is dressing up. When you are retired there is not reason to dress up.  I do dress to go to church just because I don't believe jeans or sweats belong in church, but that is me.

She puts a recipe for Jam Tarts in the book.  I made tarts once, they were just awful.  We were in Oklahoma City where dad was attending the FAA Academy. I was in high school and wanted to make a dessert. I made an oatmeal shell, too thick, and used what was in the frig, green grapes, peanut butter, jello, and something else. Dad made me eat one and he ate one too, but mom and my brother took one bite and threw them out.  That is my one and only attempt at making tarts. Perhaps it is time for me to try them again.

Week 17 The Gentle Art of Domesticity

How much pressure have you put on yourself to keep a perfect house or provide an endless stream of homemade meals?
* Have the epiphanies which Jane writes about from personal experience and observation offered you a different view of how to love your domestic life and let go of perfectionism?
* What made your heart happy in today's study?

I keep my house clean because that is who I am.  When it gets overly cluttered I take a day to unclutter because I have been busy or involved in a project and just let stuff lay around until I was ready to take care of it.

She talks about bread making. I think it takes the right temp and humidity and the proper yeast and kneading.  Anyone can make bread, you truly can, but you need to be careful of the yeast needing the right conditions to rise properly.  There is nothing better than the smell of yeast bread and then when done, smear butter on the top, cut off a piece and slather it with butter. It truly does not get any better than that.

Haberdashery:  that is a mouthful. I always wanted to spend time in one, but are there any left?  There is a 4 story store in San Francisco that I think comes close full of fabric, trim, buttons, etc.  You can spend a week or more in there. It is a magical place.  Can you imagine working in a Haberdashery, all the little things to keep track of, all the things that you probably would never see all of, and just the sheer magic of finding unique items for just the right project.  I like going to antique stores and finding old sewing boxes which is a mini Haberdashery in itself.  I keep the wood thread spools because they don't make them anymore, the plastic i use as cat toys.  It is fun to find old needles cases, buttons, etc and you have a new sewing box as well. Sometimes I find a penny or dime in them, who knows why were they found in a pocket of a garment that was being mended?  Antique stores often have old buttons, old lace, etc, all the things that you would find in a haberdashery.

Ironing: I hate it. I learned how on pillow slips and tea towels, and my dad's handkerchiefs. I hate ironing shirts, the sleeves and yoke, no thanks. I rarely iron anything but fabric i buy and wash and iron for a project.  Please make it go away.

Clotheslines: I remember hanging clothes as a kid.  You wet a paper towel and ran it along the line to clean it especially the bird poop.  My mom would fill her mouth full of clothespins and down the row she would go. I was too short so I handed her the items and the pins and soon they were flapping in the breeze. How I loved to smell clean sheets on my bed that night, sheer heaven.  There are hardly any lines anymore, we have dryers and that is not a pleasant smell except I use dryer balls and put a drop of essential oil on them.  Plus there is the possibility of someone stealing your stuff.  Then when we brought everything in there was more ironing. Did I mention I hate to iron?

Cocoon

This morning when I got up I still had a hanging J, 3 hours later I have a cocoon and the other one has been at the top all night and hopefully will J soon.  So exciting.

Hanging J

So this one did not eat much today but spent the day at the top of the cage which is really the bottom, but anyway I went to check on them this evening to see if the needed food and he is in his J formation right before the cocoon comes on.  The other polished off 2 leaves and proceeded up to the top as well. I am hoping when I get up in the morning I have 2 J's.  So excited to have monarchs and I will be sad when I release them.

D27 on the Move

Raptor Resource Project
11 hrs
D27 started her spring migration on May 20, leaving a spot on the Upper Iowa river roughly 10 miles northeast of her natal nest and flying north! Between May 20 and the afternoon of June 4, she flew an incredible 683 miles northwest, ending up in northwestern Ontario, not far from last year's summer range. Her longest continuous flight took place on June 3rd, when she flew 135.9 miles in 20.97 hours, yielding an average speed of 6.4 miles per hour. She also achieved her fastest flight during this time, averaging 33.93 miles per hour between 12:19 PM and 18:19 PM. Her big day was aided by clear skies and favorable winds out of the south!
She appears to have reached her summer range, but she could still have some surprises in store for us! Will she leave as early as she did last year? Will forest fires once again push her south? Her route north was later but a little more direct than it was last year. Will that hold true when she returns? The more we watch her, the more questions we have. Thanks for the postcard, D27! We wish you the best of luck in the north!

Monarchs

I was looking at all the milkweed plants coming and what did I see but 2 caterpillars. Where have they been cos i have worked in that flower bed. Which reminds me tomorrow I am planting the seed I saved from last year.  I need a whole bed full to feed them. They eat a lot and poop even more.  So they are in the house in their cage and happily eating.  How long til they cocoon?
